Joe Sabol said business is good since he relocated in April from Philadelphia to Parma. He said he may have to hire freelancers to help out.

PARMA For more than 30 years, Joe Sabol was a big-time photographer and videographer in a big market — Philadelphia.

Earlier this year, the Parma native returned to his hometown, where he has established a new headquarters for his business, J & J Video Productions.  Sabol should have no trouble here — not with his client list.

For example, in the mid-1990s, Sabol shot a country music legends tour when it stopped in Strausstown, Pa. It was there he met the late Johnny Cash.

Sabol said Cash wasn’t feeling well between sets and asked him for something to drink. Sabol brought him a bottle of water, and they chatted.

“He was a very quiet man, but when he did talk, what he said was profound,” Sabol said.

Sabol told Cash that his mom was a fan of the “Johnny Cash Show,” which aired in the late 1960s and early 1970s.

At the start of each show, Cash introduced himself by saying, “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.” Cash told Sabol he hadn’t used that line onstage in years.

While Cash and Sabol talked, a boy sneaked backstage and asked Cash to perform “A Boy Named Sue.”

“In that voice of his, Johnny Cash said, ‘I’m sorry, son, I can’t do that anymore,’” Sabol said. “‘I’m a born-again Christian. Do you know what that means? I don’t use that kind of language anymore.’”

Sabol was amazed when Cash launched into his next set.

As the curtain rose, Cash, with his back toward the audience, turned and said, “Hello, I’m Johnny Cash.” He pointed at Sabol and winked.

Then, about five minutes into his set, Cash performed “A Boy Named Sue,” dedicating it to the boy who requested it.

Cash bleeped over the profanities in the song.

“The crowd just roared,” Sabol said. “He was truly fantastic.”

A mom’s influence

Sabol, 55, credits his mom, Tilly, for helping him find his way in life.

He took his first photo when he was a teen. It showed the Cleveland Buckeyes, a drum and bugle corps for kids and young adults. Sabol was a drummer in the group.

Sabol submitted the picture to the Parma Sun Post. He said the newspaper wrote a story around it.

After that, Tilly encouraged Sabol to pursue photography, so he started taking pictures of everything.

Then Tilly developed eye problems. The family moved to Philadelphia because a hospital there specialized in eye surgery. Doctors restored her sight.

Meanwhile, Sabol graduated with a business degree from Penn State University.

After college, Sabol worked in sales. He said he did well but in his early 20s grew tired of the rat race. He wanted out.

Tilly again steered him into photography — and videography, too — but Sabol didn’t think he was good enough. Plus he had never shot a video.

So Tilly looked up a video store. She called the owner and told him that her son would visit the next day.

The store owner had just received new video equipment. He spent a day teaching Sabol how to use it.

Sabol asked the owner how much the equipment would cost. The owner said it wouldn’t cost Sabol anything.

“He said, ‘You’re mom has paid for it already.’ She bought me my first camera and video equipment.”

“Within two weeks I shot my first wedding,” Sabol said. “It’s been nonstop ever since.”

Parma bound

Sabol met and married his wife Diane in Philadelphia and the two formed J & J. She helps run the business.

Through J & J, Sabol has worked on TV commercials, promotional videos and brochures for companies like Pepsi and Sheraton Hotels & Resorts.

Sabol has also worked for nonprofits. He shot a promotional video for the American Cancer Society.

Just three weeks ago, Sabol snapped pictures of Bernice King, daughter of the late Martin Luther King, while she spoke on behalf of underprivileged children at the Cleveland Convention Center.

Meeting celebrities is a part of life for Sabol. On the country music legends tour, where he met Cash, Sabol mixed with other country stars, like Billy Ray Cyrus.

Sabol said he had lunch with Cyrus backstage.

“He’s the most unpretentious person you ever met,” Sabol said. “He’s a very honest and straight-laced individual but not afraid to have fun.”

After lunch with Cyrus, Sabol walked offstage to set up his camera equipment.

“I was swamped by girls asking me for my autograph,” Sabol said. “I signed them. They wanted my autograph just because they saw me sitting next to him.”

Meanwhile, life in Philadelphia was exciting, but crime was on the rise, so Sabol and Diane decided to set up shop elsewhere.

After the couple checked out various parts of the country, Sabol suggested the Cleveland area, Parma specifically.

“She thought I was nuts,” Sabol said of his wife’s initial reaction.

However, after the couple visited here, Diane agreed that Parma would make a nice home. They moved onto State Road in April.

J&J Video Productions Reconnects with Cleveland Ohio After 26 Years in Eastern Pennsylvania

NewswireToday - /newswire/ - Cleveland, OH, United States, 03/13/2010 - After 26 yrs in business, J&J Video Productions is relocating their operations from the outskirts of Philadelphia to Cleveland Ohio.

After flourishing in Pennsylvania for the last several decades, J&J Video Productions has returned home to the Cleveland Area. J&J Video Productions is a full service video and photography production team and are once again proud to offer their experience and expertise to the people of North Eastern Ohio.

In a recent interview, Executive Producer Joseph M. Sabol said, "From the beginning we have been fascinated with utilizing cutting edge video technology for the benefit of our client’s production needs. This attention to what works best today has yielded experience that can’t be taught and quality that can’t be matched. Not only did we quickly realize the potential that the home video market brought to professional video services, but we were one of the first businesses on the east coast to experiment with and produce material shot in HDTV."

Initial forays into wedding videography and photography services quickly grew to include community functions, sporting events, music videos, and commercial oriented work of all kinds. From bridal shows to trade shows, school plays to American Idol contestant test videos, J&J have literally handled it all. Sabol commented that “Our client list includes some of the hottest stars in the music business, as well as some of the hottest businesses period!” One of their most recent projects saw them as the sole commissioned videographer of the historic transport of the steam generators from the Chesapeake Bay port to installation at the Three Mile Island nuclear reactor in Harrisburg, PA.

When asked Sabol said, "This job tested our abilities to the maximum; requiring thirty days of on location shooting - rain or shine. This was by far the most intricate shoot we have ever done. Network television would have required twenty cameras to produce this, but we were restricted to one camera for security and logistical reasons." Once filming was complete, J&J was also commissioned to edit and produce a ‘highlight’ clip for KMX’s use in an industry wide competition. The work done on this project has garnered them international attention because Fagioli World Wide of Reggio Emilia, Italy – the company responsible for the generator’s transport – along with KMX International are the hands down favorite to win this International Competition. Sabol compared it to the Oscars of Heavy Equipment Transportation.

J&J Video (JandJvideoproductions.com) offers a wide array of services from shooting and directing to producing and editing. "Naturally, we provide film or slide to video transfer and DVD duplication. We even provide emergency services for when the other guy falls through."
